Day 13 - Socialisation successes
A day worth repeating
Today was great– a simple sentence that feels so very good.
Yes, she still mouths– a lot less than before– , she can still howl in her crate like crazy– this also feels like it is getting less intense– , but her overall behaviour today was a lot more pleasant, and we had great adventures. Another full night's sleep was the cherry on top.
Still do not bite me
The training to not mouth me continued today. The rough edges are gone, but she is still a pup– I need to understand her urge to bite things and set her up for success. She also seems to enjoy this a lot more. She is around me, gets belly-rubs and gets to move around a bit. Getting her to understand that inside means calm is something I will work on later.
Adventure time
A big part of today was socialisation. First we went back to the local 'forest' and had a short walk, with some photo opportunities. I was hoping to shoot the perfect Christmas card, but she is unable to stand still for a fraction of a second– and I can't blame her with all those new sights, sounds and smells.
After about 15 minutes we went back to the car. Once in the car, I could not resist to go back to the garden centre.
Once there, I decided to take the gamble– put Tera in a shopping cart again, but this time go inside and walk the short route.
She did awesome. In the beginning she was slightly overwhelmed, but very quickly settled and lay down. There were a lot of people inside– pretty much all of them doing their own thing, ignoring Tera. One person at the checkout line gave her a scratch– no problem, that was one out of a hundred.
Tomorrow I will be back; this time taking the long route through the Christmas exhibition. Lots of loud sounds and blinking lights– I feel like she is ready for this.
I will also look for a local petting zoo.
Maslow can be proud of me
Last week, the pet store where I buy Tera's food was closed, so I could not order a new box of her raw food. When collecting the current batch, we calculated her needs and thought we would make it until next Tuesday, when the new orders come in. Unfortunately, I calculated it for a weight of 5kg, not the 6.2kg that she is now. This difference in weight makes the current batch last until Saturday.
This forced me to order a box online. I would much rather support local stores that offer things like raw food, but this time my hands were tied. This store delivers on Friday, so we should make it just fine. A side annoyance is that it cost me around 50% more than at my local store due to the special shipping.
Why did I not order an extra box in the first place just to be sure? Easy; I had no idea if Tera would like this food and if there was no allergic reaction to any of the contents.
It might be a bit last-minute, but another stupid mistake was prevented. This is the downside of the pre-made raw food, compared to preparing it yourself. I am not confident enough to try this– especially with a pup, so this is the best I can do for now.
What great adventures did you have with your pup? Which ones made you the most proud of your pup?
