Day 14 & 15 - Proud
Tera meets Christmas– and is sick of it.
I am proud of you, Tera. We are making great progress on the mouthing and socialisation.
Yesterday, I did not have time for a blog, so I will combine them into one. A lot of things I did yesterday and today are very similar.
Mouthing
I am still training to stop the mouthing, but I feel like I have hit a wall. I feel like she is trying to play with me and the mouthing is her challenging me to react. I will try to stop with my interruptions for the light offences– this is 99% of the mouthing– and remove myself from her and ignore it.
Socialising
Both yesterday and today we visited a garden center. Yesterday we went to the one we were at earlier this week and we took the long route, through the Christmas exhibition. She could not possibly care less about the noise or people. She sniffs a bit, looks around, but quickly will lie down and look and take it in that way.
Today I went to a garden center a bit further away– to test if she would throw up. The way there, we were golden. Inside she was a champ as well, even with a very loud Christmas show with heavy bass and flickering lights. We were inside for at least half an hour. A few people asked if they could pet her, and that was no problem. Tera was on her best behaviour as well with the people.
On the way back, I was almost home, and she threw up again. I will avoid these 'longer' drives for a while– I do not want her to associate a car drive with throwing up. I will take her to the local 'forest', since that is close by, and I will look for something different that is close as well– I feel like she graduated from the garden center. I am thinking of a petting zoo.
Meeting the family
Yesterday, my family was having an early Christmas dinner at my aunt's. This was a thirty minute plus drive for me, so I sort of knew what would happen. I fed her last meal hours in advance, so that would all be digested, but still no luck. Three minutes from our destination, she could not hold it in any longer.
At my aunt's, she did great– she was her happy self and the family really liked her, and the feeling seemed to be mutual.
She did start to misbehave towards my aunt's Golden Retriever later on. I was hoping that she would put Tera in her place for being obnoxious, but she was doing her very best to tolerate Tera. Eventually Tera became too much, and I intervened myself. The Golden Retriever missed some socialisation as a pup– due to her getting training for a support dog– so she is not great at this sort of thing.
I could not blame her too much for her behaviour, since she had been awake for a good 4 hours already, so she had to be overtired.
On the way back, I believe she also threw up a bit– or at least tried– so I had to clean her up a bit when we were home.
Once cleaned up, we went to bed immediately, since it was past 22:00; way past puppy bedtime (and mine).
Having to keep an eye on Tera for the whole evening– along with me being a big introvert– exhausted me more than I anticipated. I did not nearly sleep enough to recover from that. With a pup, I can't stay in bed for 10 hours to catch up on sleep.
Obedience
I did not train a whole lot the last few days, but I did start to introduce the formal 'heel'– both the sitting to my left, and walking nicely next to me.
Sit is something I will mostly focus on outside, since inside it is pretty much nailed.
The future
Given the fact that the last few days felt a bit difficult to write about sometimes, I might not blog every single day from now on. I would rather have one article every few days with some nice contents, rather than stretching something or writing a very short article.
Did your pup have car sickness? How did you manage it?
